George Washington 1st President Federalist Born: Feb. 22, 1732 Death: Dec. 14, 1799 Years served: 1789-1792 and 1792-1796 Vice President: John Adams (both terms) George Washington in my opinion was the best president America has ever had. He got an A in my book because he was the standard for new leaders, he was a proven leader, and he was the man to keep America together in its earliest days. George Washington wanted to keep peace with all the people of the world. During his presidency France and Britain were fighting and Washington kept America from getting in a war on either side. Washington failed in this on two occasions one being with the Native Americans when he had to attack them and finally defeated them at the battle of fallen timbers. The other time was the whiskey rebellion where Washington crushed the rebellious farmers. Washington also wanted to keep America away from another monarchy. You see that after two terms as president Washington steps down and allows the democracy to flourish. The congress was very found of George Washington. They elected him unanimously as president. They saw him as the hero of the new country. Some people even wanted to make Washington a sort of king with complete control. Also the people loved Washington so the legislatures had to keep him on there side. The Anti-Federalist didn't always agree with Washington though. Washington's administration was most successful with creating a way for things to be done. Without Washington's administration we would have never had the four-year term or the two-term maximum. We wouldn't have the ability to pick the chief justice on talent instead of age. The administrations downfall was the Indian affairs that in my opinion could have been handled better. I believe that Washington had no right to force the natives to leave their land for others to settle. The attack on the Native Americans was corrected though by the treaties with the six tribes later. Washington shaped the future of America in so many ways but the most important would have to be the passing of the bill of rights. This lead to equality it lead to women’s rights and the equal treatment of all Americans. It gave Americans far and wide unalienable rights that couldn't be taken away. George Washington was the first president and improved America in hundreds of ways. America is better off for having him. Of all the great men in office who got this country through wars, tyranny, and corruption no one has lead better then the first president George Washington. For this reason and many more he deserves an A. DeGregorio, William, and Sandra Lee Stuart. The Complete Book of U.S. Presidents. Fort Lee, NJ:Barricade Books, 2009.
